Metaphors: The Well-Dressed Essay

If we think of the narrative as an outfit, let’s imagine metaphors as the jewelry—bright, shiny things that attract attention. Most people enjoy jewelry, but if you were to consult with an employment counselor who was sending you out on a job interview, she might explain that, when you dress to make a good impression, your best approach to the issue of jewelry is to go easy on the shiny stuff. She would advise you not to show up with gigantic hoop earrings or sparkly spangles or charm bracelets that herald your arrival. A lot of people don’t like that look, and your goal, when you’re going for a job interview, is to follow the path of least resistance. Why engage in high-risk behavior, like wearing ankle bracelets or mood rings, that some people, fairly or unfairly, might deem just a tad tacky? Similarly, why clutter up your narrative with too many metaphors? It will just distract your reader from your work.
